Super Bowl Updates

We wanted to update our members on citywide infrastructure projects currently underway by the Department of Public Works (DPW).

The current focus and schedule are as follows:

  • Poydras from S. Claiborne to S. Liberty
  • Poydras from Convention Center to Loyola
  • Julia and Howard Extensions
  • Girod from Loyola to S. Liberty
  • North Rampart, Iberville, Burgundy, and Canal Streets (as part of the Hotel Collapse Site)
  • Central Business District and French Quarter Sidewalk Repairs

Poydras (Claiborne to S. Liberty)

Scope: Roadway removal and replacement, re-striping, sidewalk repairs, installation of Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant ramps, and driveway apron repairs.

All work is completed except for minor punch list items. Permanent striping on Poydras, Julia, and Girod Streets will be carried out once all other work is finished. Additionally, the City's FEMA-funded road construction program announced lane closures on Poydras Street and S. Claiborne Avenue beginning September 23, 2024. For full details click here.

Poydras (S. Liberty to Convention Center Blvd )

Scope: Patching, milling, and resurfacing the street, re-striping, sidewalk repairs, installation of Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant ramps where needed, and driveway apron repairs.

Last week crews continued addressing punch list items and installing sidewalks during daytime hours, while nighttime crews proceeded with paving operations through October 11. Construction along Poydras Street (S. Liberty to Convention Center Blvd.) remains on schedule for completion by October 2024. A bike lane will be added in both directions on Poydras Street between Loyola Avenue and Convention Center Blvd. Preparations for striping work are now underway.

Julia (Convention Center Blvd to Loyola)

Scope: Roadway removal and replacement, re-striping, sidewalk repairs, installation of Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant ramps, and driveway apron repairs.

Crews are continuing drainage upgrades at the Baronne and Julia Street intersection, which involve connecting the new pipe to the box culvert and installing two drainage structures. Concrete patching is also underway at two locations along Julia St., along with the installation of the remaining ADA-compliant ramps at intersections.

All work, except for striping, is expected to be completed by mid-October, weather permitting. Permanent striping on Poydras, Julia, and Girod Streets will be completed after all other work is finished.

Julia and Howard Extensions

Scope: Patching, milling, and resurfacing the street, and various sidewalk repairs.

All work is complete. The Union Passenger Terminal (UPT) will take care of the striping for the roadway at this location.

Girod (Loyola to S. Liberty)

Scope: Patching, milling, and resurfacing the street, re-striping, and various sidewalk repairs.

Street repairs are complete, and the street has reopened. Sidewalk repairs are still in progress. Permanent striping on Poydras, Julia, and Girod Streets will be done simultaneously at a later date. The overall project is expected to be completed by October.

North Rampart, Iberville, Burgundy and Canal Streets (as part of the Hotel Collapse Site)

Scope: Waterline and drainage installation, along with pavement and sidewalk restoration at various locations.

Iberville Street: The waterline installation on Iberville is complete, except at the Iberville/Burgundy intersection. The street remains closed to both vehicular and pedestrian traffic; however, the block is accessible to local traffic only. Sidewalk and paving work will occur at various locations along the block.

Burgundy Street: The waterline installation on Burgundy is complete, except at the Iberville/Burgundy intersection, where work is ongoing. The intersection will remain closed for an additional two weeks, weather permitting. Delays in reopening are due to the Sewerage and Water Board (SWB) identifying necessary valve repairs at the intersection. Valve repair work will begin this week, requiring the intersection to remain closed for another two weeks.

Canal: Crews have removed the granite pavers and curbs in preparation for the waterline replacement. Waterline work is ongoing. Once the waterline work is finished, the team will move on to milling, overlay, and final sidewalk repairs.

North Rampart: Waterline installation work is complete, and the next step is to tie the new waterline into the existing one. Please note that when crews perform this tie-in, residents and businesses may experience service disruptions. The contractor will notify those anticipated to be affected by water service interruptions 48 hours in advance. The right traffic lane, parking lane, and sidewalk remain closed to accommodate construction.

Sidewalk Repairs

Sidewalk repairs began in late August in the Central Business District (CBD), aiming to enhance safety and accessibility by addressing both concrete and specialty sidewalks (brick and/or stone). Crews are working at multiple locations within the project areas, with additional construction storage and equipment staged in the parking lanes. Residents may experience limited parking availability due to this equipment, along with some noise and dust associated with the construction activities. To minimize disruptions, safety cones will be placed around the work sites, and temporary access will be arranged for businesses.
